Don't be part of the 44 percent...

What's going on Reader!

Did you know that 44% of Americans can't cover a $1,000 emergency expense? For years, I was one of them. I was one blown tire or an unexpected medical emergency away from being toast. That’s when I decided to declare a Financial State of Emergency and take control of my money.

Also, if you'd rather watch a 5 minute video instead of reading, here ya go.

Here’s exactly what I did to save $1,000 in just 30 days:

  1. Cut Unnecessary Spending: Because I was in an Financial State of Emergency. For one month, I only spent money on necessities: rent, groceries, gas, utilities, and minimum debt payments. Everything else, Dunkin, Netflix, and Chick Fil A was on hold.
  2. Implemented the 10/10 Rule: I was able to save $10 by 10 am every by planning my day ahead of time. To resist the temptation to hit Dunkin on my way to work, every day before bed, I prepared coffee and breakfast at home for the following day. Not only do I get to wake up to freshly roasted coffee every day, but I have zero temptation to buy coffee when its already in my hand on the drive to work.
  3. Audit Yourself: I logged into my bank to audit every single transaction from the previous month. I got an immediate wake up call when I was confronted with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Dunkin, Chick Fil A, Grub Hub yada yada yada. All wasted money. This was the wake up call I needed.
  4. Create a Budget: A budget isn’t just about tracking expenses, it’s about making a plan for your money ahead of time. This step alone could help you find $500 just by paying attention and creating a plan.
  5. Sell Your Crap: I listed all my crap...I mean stuff on Facebook Marketplace and turned clutter into cash. Most of us have at least $1,000 worth of junk sitting in our closets.
  6. Side Hustle: I picked up extra work delivering food and taking side gigs. Every dollar counted toward my goal.

"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much" - Hellen Keller Aaron's Two Cents: My wife, the draft horse If you've ever been on a call with me, you've heard my favorite analogy about couples working together on their finances. One draft horse (think Budweiser) can pull 8,000 pounds on it's own. You would think that two horses connected together could pull 16,000 pounds. It makes sense, but it's wrong. Two draft horses that have trained together and pull in the same direction can...
